What Parents Need to Know About COVID-19 Vaccines for Infants, Toddlers and More

mom and baby wearing masks to protect from covid-19

Over the past two years, our list of questions about COVID-19 has grown immensely. As parents, we are looking for the most up to date information from trustworthy sources to help make the best decisions for our families’ health.

Earlier this summer, infant and toddler COVID-19 vaccines were granted emergency use authorization by the FDA after comprehensive clinical trials showed the COVID-19 vaccines to be safe and effective for those over the age of 6 months. This new recommendation makes roughly 2.2 million children in California and nearly 20 million children in the US younger than 5 years of age eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Last week, Bricia and Paulina sat down with Dr. Erica Pan, State Epidemiologist and mom of two, to ask her questions that many of us are thinking.

Our Interview with Dr. Erica Pan

Q: Are children receiving the same dosage as adults?

A: The different drug manufacturers have their own formulas for their COVID-19 vaccine, and their dosages reflect what a person needs to gain protection from the virus with these safe and effective vaccines.

The dosages are based on a child’s average size at a certain age. Doctors have found the right dosage for children that show the same amount of antibody responses that adult dosages have provided.

Q: What does the vaccine dose schedule look like for kids?

A: Moderna is a two-dose COVID-19 vaccination for kids ages 6 months to 5 years and for ages 6-17. The two doses are given at least 28 days apart.

Pfizer is a three-dose vaccine for kids ages 6 months to 4 years (5-17 already authorized). The first two doses are given at least 21 days apart, with the third dose given at least 60 days later.

Q: Is there a better vaccine choice for our children? Pfizer or Moderna?

A: It is important to remember that COVID-19 vaccines remain the safest way to prevent hospitalization and death from the disease for everyone 6 months and older – no brand is better than the other.

Q: What do the clinical trials for the children’s vaccine entail?

A: Clinical trials involving thousands of infants and toddlers 6 months and older firmly show that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective in this population.

Pfizer vaccine trials involved roughly 4,500 infants and toddlers while Moderna vaccine trials involved over 6,500 infants and toddlers all over the age of 6 months. The scientific review found that completion of either vaccine series produced antibody levels similar to those achieved in individuals 16-25 years.

With their parent’s permission, children are enrolled in the trial randomly. They either receive a placebo (saltwater) or the vaccine. The children receive regular blood tests and are tested for how much their immune systems respond to the vaccine. Doctors check the levels of the antibodies over time to learn about overall effectiveness of the vaccine. Any side effects to a vaccine would typically present themselves within the first month or two after receiving the vaccine. This is typical of any vaccine.

Q: Where can parents take their children to receive their COVID-19 vaccines?

A: Families can schedule an appointment for their children to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in select pharmacy locations. By law, pharmacies can independently vaccinate children 3 and older and can vaccinate children under 3 if they work in partnership with another provider. However, this varies by pharmacy. Contact your local pharmacy to see which ages they vaccinate.

Call your pediatrician or health clinic to get your child vaccinated or, for readers in California, go to MyTurn.ca.gov or call the hotline at 833-422-4255 to find a vaccine near you.

Amazon #ClearTheList Spotlight

Header Image.png

What a time it’s been for students & teachers over the past year and a half!

Schools, students and teachers have done such a great job of shifting to online learning during the pandemic - some of us have discovered that our children learn even better in a digital environment! But we’re not going to lie, we’re a little bit excited to have our kids head back to school in person. There’s just something about helping them get their snacks & lunches ready, pick special outfits for the first day and back to school shopping for fun supplies that really starts the school year on a good note.

But did you know that many teachers buy supplies for their classrooms using their own money? This school year we partnered with Amazon to celebrate teachers by helping them get ready for the new school year – whether that’s back in the classroom or continued Zoom sessions from home, and everything in between.

Amazon actively supports the #ClearTheList movement, where teachers are encouraged to create their school supplies list on Amazon. These Amazon Wish Lists can be shared with anyone that wants to support that teacher and classroom, especially to give them the tools and supplies they most need and want ahead of this school year.

By the way, creating an Amazon Wish List is super simple!

  1. All you have to do is visit Amazon.com/WishList, and “Create a List.”

  2. From there, it’s easy to share the link with others. Customers who purchase items from an Amazon Wish List can have them sent directly to the Wish List owner.

After that, anyone can purchase items from your list! Share it with family and friends, post it on social media and encourage people to not only donate to your list but also others!

We recently partnered with Amazon to conduct a giveaway for $1000 to clear a teacher’s list on our behalf. We were so inspired by all the submissions to our giveaway that we decided to highlight a few more standout teachers in their community.

Check out our contestant spotlight below and please consider donating and fulfilling these teachers lists! They work so hard to teach our children, the people who will become our future leaders, and they deserve the best opportunities out there.

Getting My Family and Children Vaccinated: A Facebook Live Conversation with En Confianza

In December 2020, after almost a year of quarantining, my family and I were diagnosed with Covid-19. As an essential restaurant worker, I took all the necessary & recommended precautions. I wore my mask everyday, washed my hands and wore gloves handling food, especially around restaurant employees and customers. When heading home to my family, I used hand sanitizer in the car and wiped down everything around that I touched. I started a regular exercise routine and tried to keep a healthy diet to boost my immune system. Still, I contracted COVID-19 and I still have no idea how my family and I got it.

This is why it was important for me to get vaccinated when the opportunity became available to me as a restaurant worker. I knew it was the safest option to stay healthy for my community, my family and especially myself. We also understand that it’s completely normal to still feel unsure about getting the vaccine. This is why we decided to parter with the HHS COVID-19 Public Education Campaign - Juntos Sí Podemos!

This Month with En Confianza

On Tuesday, August 17th, join me, Paulina, while I moderate a panel of experts and you can ask your biggest questions about the COVID-19 vaccines. You’ll get the latest information and see how it impacts your family.

For this live event, “Getting My Family and Children Vaccinated”, we will have some amazing community leaders and experts as part of the panel:

  • Myself, Paulina Lopez Velazquez, from Super Mamas

  • Antonio Tijerino, from Hispanic Heritage

  • Felix Valbuena, Jr., from the CHASS Center

Let's Eat! A Review on Sunnie: A Meal Delivery Service for Kids!

We ALWAYS get asked about what we feed our kids. The truth is, we have picky eaters 😬 just like a lot of you. Sometimes they can be good with eating their veggies and a variety of what we cook for dinner, but honestly we are busy moms and we were looking for an easy option on school days and even for quick dinners after a long day at work.

We recently connected with the creators Sunnie, a meal service for kids that provides plant-forward, balanced, and nutritious pre-made lunches, and decided to give it a shot for our own kids. What we discovered is our kids love these meals. Paulina’s girls are big fans of the pizza kits. And they’re so easy to order! They are delivered straight to our front door with multiple options like pizza, tacos and sun-butter & jelly, plus have options to buy in bundles and add on fun snacks like smoothies, granola bites and yes, even cookies that we may have stolen a bite of. 😋

We were so impressed with the meals that we reached out to co-founders & moms, Katy Tucker and Lisette Howard, for an interview on what Sunnie is all about.

Our Interview with Sunnie Co-Founders Katy Tucker and Lisette Howard

SUPER MAMAS: Tell us who you are, what you do, and a little bit about your families.

SUNNIE: We’re Katy Tucker and Lisette Howard. We’re both friends who live in the Los Angeles area and we each have three children (Katy has 3 girls and Lisette has 3 boys). We both love food and healthy cooking for our families so we started our own business, Sunnie, to make healthy lunches and snacks for kids. (We named the company after Katy’s grandma Sunnie - who lived to be 100 and we think would be very proud of what we’re doing!).

SUPER MAMAS: How did the idea for Sunnie come about?

SUNNIE: After running around from pickup to pickup, baseball games and doing life in general with too many activities jammed into the day, we realized that the pace of life has not kept up with the pace of kid food.  How many times have you found yourself grabbing a shelf-stable, preservative-ridden snack to keep the crew happy?  We wanted to change that and create meals and snacks that kids love to eat and parents feel guilt-free about giving their kids!

SUPER MAMAS: Tell us about your ingredients. Why was it so important to you to create fresh, organic, vegetarian meals for kids?

SUNNIE: We spend MANY hours sourcing the freshest organic ingredients for our products. It's important to us that our label contains only clean, easy-to-read ingredients with zero preservatives.  These days finding something convenient in the market is difficult and

SUPER MAMAS: What are your top tips for encouraging our picky eaters to try new foods?

SUNNIE: The best thing we ever learned (from our incredible Sunnie Advisor, Jill Castle) is that you should always have one food on the plate you know your kid loves and another that might be new or even something they said in the past they don't like.  We can't tell you how many parents have told us that their kids "hate" carrots but eat carrots in their Sunnie Pizza Pack because they're there!

SUPER MAMAS: Besides Sunnie, what are your favorite recipes to feed your kids to guarantee they’re getting a healthy, balanced meal? (But let’s be honest - sometimes we have to give in to chicken nuggets, pizza or Mac and cheese too. 😂)

SUNNIE: A few staples in our houses are DIY taco night as well as spaghetti and meatballs!  Kids love to make tacos (their way) with a whole slew of different items to choose from and what kid does not love spaghetti?!

SUPER MAMAS: Where can parents purchase Sunnie?

SUNNIE: You can find us on our website, www.feelsunnie.com or at a handful of local specialty grocers in LA.

SUPER MAMAS: Can we expect new types of meals in the future?

SUNNIE: We have lots of exciting things in our product pipeline including a breakfast option (yay for easy on-the-go breakfast!) and we also have a new snack line that is coming to a grocery store near you this summer.

Want to try Sunnie?

Sunnie offers local delivery to all LA and Orange County zip codes. If you live in other parts of California or in Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah or New Mexico they can ship products to you at a flat rate. Click this link to learn more.

More about Sunnie: Two busy, health-conscious moms, Katy & Lisette, were tired of the lunchtime “battle royale” with their kids- the non-stop daily meal planning, the half-eaten lunches, and "constantly having to compromise between a balanced meal and “just eat something”. In addition to the constant in-home pressure, they were also frustrated about the lack of healthy grab-and-go meals for kids at the grocery store to support active, busy families. They knew it was time to revolutionize the approach to kids’ mid day meals.

Katy & Lisette teamed up with Jill Castle, MS, RN, one of the country's leading pediatric nutrition experts to find out what type of nutrition 3-to-7 year olds actually need in order to support their growing bodies. From there they spent their free time honing and testing plant-forward meal kits using healthy alternative ingredients. The end result was Sunnie (named after Katy’s grandmother and the feeling kids get when eating healthy, filling meals).

Sunnie exists so that parents can feel better about feeding their kids when time is limited or they're on the move. Kid-approved. Nothing but the good stuff, so kids can "shine from the inside out". #feelsunnie

Churro French Toast Bites Recipe for Valentine's Day

Photo Feb 12, 5 21 58 PM.jpg

It’s the weekend of love! 🥰 It’s a time to show the ones closest to you a little extra love than normal - from your partner to the kids, even the family dog. We all deserve a little extra love, especially after this year!

If you’re looking for a fun family activity and an easy recipe to make that everyone will enjoy, this is it! All the directions and even step by step images are below. I made this with the girls earlier this week and we ate them up, and we’re ready to make more on Sunday. Get the kids to surprise their super mama or super papa in bed with breakfast, or make a picnic spread in the backyard for a Valentine’s Day breakfast. It’ll make for a great start to the day + holiday!

Will you be trying our Churro French Toast Bites? Tag us in a pic on Sunday and we’ll repost!

Churro French Toast Bites

Ingredients

  • 10 slices of slightly stale bread

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • A few drops of vanilla (optional)

  • Dash of salt

  • 2 tablespoons butter for frying

  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

  • Nutella, chocolate or maple syrup for serving

Preparation

  1. Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the hearts from the bread. Make sure you leave the bread for a few hours or even over night, as this will help it soak up more of the egg mixture without falling apart or losing its shape!

  2. Beat the egg with milk, vanilla and salt in a bowl. Put it aside.

  3. Mix cinnamon, sugar & brown sugar in a separate bowl. Put it aside.

  4. In a pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Reduce the heat to medium-low.

  5. Dip each heart in egg mixture and coat both sides, being careful not to let it soak too much or they will lose their shape. Shake off excess egg mixture.

  6. Place the bread in the pan and fry about 45 seconds per side.

  7. Transfer the hearts into the bowl with cinnamon-brown sugar mixture. Coat well!

  8. Serve with a side of Nutella, chocolate or syrup. Enjoy! 😋

AdobeStock_379016182.jpeg

Halloween is almost here! But what can we do for our kids when the CDC recommends skipping trick or treating this year?!

You can still make the holidays fun while making it safe. We’ll definitely be dressing up in costume this year, but we’re staying home and celebrating indoors instead. We put together some activities we’ll be trying at home with our families.

Halloweekend Celebration Alternatives

  • Halloween Movie Night - Cuddle up in costume, eat halloween candy, and watch a spooky movie or two. Common Sense Media has a great list of Halloween movies the whole family will love.

  • Trick or Treat Scavenger Hunt - Even if you’re not taking the kids trick-or-treating this year, they can still get some candy in a fun way! During last week’s episode, Bricia mentions that she will be putting together a scavenger hunt for Eduardo in the backyard. You can base it off of an Easter egg hunt and hide candy or little Halloween treats in the yard, or use these free printables like this one or this one to give you some ideas.

  • Halloween Bake Off - Put on your aprons and chefs hats, it’s time to bake! These spooky recipes are fun and easy to make with the kids. You can make them all in one night or spread them out for a Halloweekend of fun.

  • Virtual Halloween Party - call up your family, friends, neighbors, and/or kid’s classmates for a Zoom party. You can have a dance party, carve pumpkins, and download spooky halloween backgrounds.

  • Pumpkin Carving Contest - Carve pumpkins with your neighbors in your driveway, on the sidewalk, or in the backyard, but of course at a safe distance. You can even carve them via Zoom with your friends! Best carving that can be seen from across the yard wins!

  • Local Halloween Drive Ups - In Los Angeles, you can visit Not So Spooky Farms in the Inland Empire or get a little spookier and see Stranger Things Drive in Downtown LA. If you’re willing to venture out of your car and try some socially distanced halloween events, then LA Mag has some options for you here. Google Halloween drive up events in your city and find one near you this week!

We also spoke with Dr. Ilan Shapiro, Medical Director of Health Education & Wellness at Altamed Health Service in Los Angeles and friend of the Super Mamas, about the best ways to safe and healthy during Halloween. While the CDC recommends staying home and celebrating Halloween in other ways, if you do live in an area where you’re allowed to trick or treat, here’s what Dr. Shapiro recommends.

Top Tips for a Safe Halloween

  1. Social distance. Don’t trick or treat with big groups, keep at least 6ft distance between groups walking ahead of you, wait for groups to finish trick-or-treating before you walk up to a house with your kids, and cross the street (if you can) when others are coming your way.

  2. Wear a mask. You can even make it part of your costume!

  3. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds when you’re home and after handling candy.

Learn more about how to make trick-or-treating safer on the CDC website.

Dr. Shapiro says, “The reality is that we know everything is still changing. Living in covid times is stressful for everyone, but halloween doesn’t have to be - it can still be a joyful celebration!” And he’s right! He reminds us that if we want to continue celebrating now and in the future, we have to make sure it’s possible for everyone in a safe way. He’ll also be celebrating Halloween at home by playing the Switch Witch game; in partnership with the Tooth Fairy, the Switch Witch exchanges Halloween candy for something better (and safer). It can be a new book, stickers, or a small toy. Less candy is safer and healthier!

If you have more questions about coronavirus and how to celebrate the holidays safely, talk to your doctor and refer to the CDC website.

DIY Playdoh

Playdoh.jpeg

Looking to try a new activity this week with the kids?

During one of our latest podcast episodes, Paulina shared that she had been making homemade playdoh with her daughters. Since they’re not going to Oaxaca this summer due to covid, they are trying to fill their days with lots of at home activities - art, baking, online classes, and more. Paulina found this recipe and they have been making it everyday for the last few weeks! All of the ingredients are pantry staples in her house so they can make it at a moments notice, It’s super hands-on for the kids, and it’s SO easy.

Homemade Playdoh Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of salt

  • Food coloring

  • 1/4 of water

  • 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable oil

  • 1/4 flour

Directions

  1. Combine salt and flour in a bowl.

  2. Slowly add vegetable oil to mixture. It will begin look clumpy, like coarse meal.

  3. Add water little by little, stirring each time until completely combined.

  4. After all the water is added, use your hands to knead the dough together.

  5. Add a few drops of food coloring to the dough. Combine with a metal spoon or with hands (although you might want to wear gloves - the food coloring can stain!).

Tips

  • Get your kids to practice their reading and math skills! Older kids can learn about measurements and read out the ingredients and directions, and the little ones can learn to follow steps and work on motor skills like pouring and mixing.

  • If the dough is sticky, add some flour to your hands while you knead the dough.

  • Store playdoh in an airtight container for more fun tomorrow!

What do you think about our activity? Is there another DIY recipe you like to make with your kids? Share it with us in the comments and we’ll try it at home too!

Racism Awareness Resources for Adults + Kids

Our hearts have been so heavy this last week. With the death of George Floyd, the protests that followed, and Breona Taylor’s birthday today, everyone is overwhelmed with what has happened. So many stories about racism and unjust events have come out over the last few days over Twitter and Instagram; from celebrities and your neighbors from down the street; those who have attended this week’s peaceful protests and even stories from year’s past. Enough is enough. Now more than ever, need to stand with our black brothers and sisters and support them in the fight for justice.

To be great allies, we must keep ourselves educated. It is one of the best things we can do to help and show the black community we are listening and are willing to learn. Below we have a list of resources - books, movies, shows - that you can watch on your own, with your kids, and share with your loved ones to spread the message that all people are created equal. Have more links to share? Post them in the comment section and we’ll add them to our list.

Together we can change the world.

Easy Banana Bread Recipe

You asked and we answered! A few nights ago on the @supermamas Instagram Story (give us a follow 😉), Paulina shared some videos of herself baking. She was making a recipe that Bricia has shared with the family for years - Banana Bread via the New York Times cooking section. This recipe is so easy and so good, every single person in our family makes it whenever there are ripe bananas in the house.

Will you be making this during our social distancing? Snap a pic and tag us on Instagram!

bread-02.jpg

NYT Banana Bread

Makes 1 loaf. Total time is 1 hour 15 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE BREAD

  • ¼ pound cool butter (1 stick), more for greasing pan

  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar

  • 2 eggs, at room temperature

  • 2 ⅓ cups very ripe bananas (about 5)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

FOR THE TOPPING

  • 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts or pecans

  • 1 tablespoon granulated or coarse sugar

  •  teaspoon cinnamon

PREPARATION

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. Using electric mixer, cream butter until smooth and fluffy. Add sugar and cream together 2 minutes more. One at a time, mix in eggs. Mix in bananas until only small lumps remain.

  2. Stir dry ingredients together and mix into banana mixture just until combined. Pour into prepared pan. If making topping, stir ingredients together and sprinkle over batter.

  3. Bake about 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Let cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack and let cool completely before wrapping tightly for storage.

New Parental Controls for a Safer Netflix Experience

instadanceparental-control-header.png

Since we started to practice social distancing in early March, we’ve been watching a Iot more television & movies than we would like to admit. 😅

Lucky for us and anyone else on a show binge, Netflix has recently updated their service to include parental controls for safer entertainment viewing. Users now have access to block movies and shows that you wouldn’t want your children to watch or even have access to, and you can even block them from coming up on your own feed! Check out all of the the controls below, based on feedback from Netflix users like you and me.

instadanceparental-control-profile-lock.png

PIN code protection for individual profiles to prevent kids from using them.

instadanceparental-control-header-global.png

Filter titles that are not appropriate for their age using filters based on country ratings

instadanceparental-control-title-restriction.png

Remove series & films by title. Blocked titles will not show in profile when this filter is used.

You can also:

  • Turn off auto-play of episodes in kid’s profiles.

  • Easily review each profile’s settings within account settings.

  • See what your kids have been watching in the profile you’ve created for them.

You can access these new controls via your account settings on your laptop or on mobile. Hopefully these updates can continue help busy parents keep a peace of mind while your little ones are watching their favorite Netflix titles!

For more info and a step-by-step of how to access these controls, head to help.Netflix.com.
