Let's Make Memelitas Together!

We are super excited to be partnering with Noggin this month to celebrate and share with everyone our culture, heritage and traditions. Food is such an important part of who we are that we couldn’t think of a better way to share a little bit of who we are than with a yummy kid friendly recipe for you!

Has it ever happened to you that you take a bite of your favorite food and you magically get transported to a special place or time in your life? That is exactly what happens to me every time I eat a memelita. I am immediately taken back to my Childhood in Oaxaca where memelita stands are found in every mercado and every busy corner through the city. I remember how my mom would pick them up for us on our way to school from the puesto in the corner from our house in the mornings or give us some cash to buy them in school for lunch.

Having memelitas for breakfast is a tradition that I have continued through the years, even after moving to the US and it has now become a staple in my dinner table in the mornings with my own family, This past summer I traveled with the girls to Oaxaca after a long time so they could reconnect with their roots and the culture, they loved learning more about the people and meaning behind the Alebrijes, seeing the Calendas (parades) with colorful dances and music through the city, visiting family and honestly just feeling free.

However, like I said, we are food people and as we ate our way through Oaxaca together one dish that we repeated more than i’d like to admit was definitely the memelitas. This is such a easy and simple yet amazingly delicious kid friendly bite that no matter where we went in the mornings we had to try memelitas everywhere we went and the girls enjoyed them so much every .. single .. time. It was such a wonderful and fun experience that when the kids get older I hope they will too be transported to this summer when they cook and eat memelitas for themselves.

Making memelitas is actually pretty simple, and I wanted to share the recipe that i use at home when I make them for the girls. You can also check out the IGReel I created in partnership with Noggin for step by step recipe video. I hope you give it a try and let me know what you think

Memelitas Recipe

Ingredients:

For Masa:

2 cups Masa Harina (Instant Masa Flour) . My favorite is the Guelaguetza Masa Harina which is made from heirloom Oaxaca Corn. .

1 ¼  cups of lukewarm water

Salt

Masa Preparation:

Add Salt to lukewarm water.

Mix flour and warm salted water.

Knead with hands until you achieve dough-like consistency, you are looking for masa that is moist to the touch, use immediately after preparing.

For Memelas:

1 lb of Fresh Masa or Prepared Masa Harina (above recipe)

¼ cup of aciento ( ground chicharron)

¼ cup black bean paste

½ cup Queso Fresco

1 cup Quesillo (Queso Oaxaca)

Preparation:

Assemble the masa into small balls (2  inch wide approximately) and set them aside.  Lightly press  each one individually on a plastic lined tortilla press. Place a no stick griddle over medium heat.  Carefully transfer each memela into the comal.  Cook each side for about 2 minutes until fully cooked.

Using your fingertips while tortilla is hot , fold up the edges of the memelaas so they can start looking like little boats, you can also  use a knife to do this.  Add a few slits in the middle.

Spread about ½ tsp of aciento on memelitas, layer with 1 tsp of beans, crumbled queso fresco and Quesillo .  Return the memelita to the hot comal until the bottom is a bit crispy.  Remove from heat, serve and enjoy!

Healthy Eats: Avocado Quesadillas with Aguacates Frescos

By: Paulina Lopez

School is back in session, which means I’m busier than ever and with little time to think about what to make for dinner. However, good health is invaluable and I want to be more proactive about the health of my family so I’m always on the lookout for resources that can help me. That’s why I’m excited about our partnership with Aguacates Frescos - Saborea Uno Hoy®, because it helps families learn how delicious fresh avocados support healthy eating patterns that can help minimize the risk of chronic diseases.

Additionally, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend healthy eating patterns to minimize the risk of chronic diseases. Unfortunately, adherence to the guidelines among all Americans is low, with added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium exceeding suggested limits and even higher among Hispanic Americans.

This is why when I’m looking for a healthy meal that still delivers on flavor and texture, I turn to recipes with fresh avocado. The American Heart Association recommends eating a variety of nutritious foods from all food groups. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help people control their weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Avocados are a healthy, nutrient-dense food that can help boost fruit intake.

Maybe you grew up thinking that there is little we can do to change our health status? Actually, there is a lot that proactive lifestyle changes can do so listen up and don’t leave health to chance.

And I love that fresh avocados can help make it easy for us to make healthier decisions! Did you know that one-third of a medium avocado (50 grams) has 80 calories and contributes nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy, nutrient-dense food choice? After taste-testing some of the most delicious avocado recipes from SaboreaUnoHoy.com, we landed on the perfect recipe for family dinner time – an avocado, bean and cheese quesadilla. This meal has become such a hit in our house, and we often pair it with a family game night handout also available on their website. This Lotería-inspired activity is educational and fun, and will motivate you and your loved ones to take control of your health together.

Want to learn more about the latest research on this? Check out our Interview with Malena Perdomo, a registered dietitian and Avocado Goodness Expert for Aguacates Frescos - Saborea Uno Hoy® to dig in more! One study supported by the Avocado Nutrition Center explored how including fresh avocados in a nutrition education intervention can support weight management while reducing the overconsumption of saturated fat and sodium for Hispanic families. Though, as with all studies there are limitations that prevent the generalization of the findings, this was encouraging news. The results support including fresh avocados – a food we all love and enjoy - in nutrition education can support weight management while reducing the overconsumption of saturated fat and sodium for Hispanic families.

My Fall Organization Goals

Image for Blog.jpeg

I can’t believe summer is over guys. It went by super quick! We had so much fun and created so many amazing memories as a family this year, but personally, one of the biggest highlights of my summer was how much organization I got done around the house. I finally got to declutter the girls’ closet, sorted all of their clothes and donated a bunch along with toys and books.  I also finally got around to organizing my laundry closet and made sure all of my Tide Pods were stored high enough so the girls wouldn’t reach them.

I realized what a difference those small changes have made in my house, not only visually but safety wise for the kids. After watching this Safe Kid Worldwide Video, it clicked in my head that most of the time we don’t realize how many dangerous things they have at their reach of their hands and how fast they can get to them! With that in mind, I decided to create a new organization list for me to accomplish this fall with small goals that I’m hoping will make a big difference in my house, and I wanted to share it with you so that you might get inspired and join me in making our #TidySafeCasa juntas! We can do this Super Mamas!

My Home Office / Working Space

Living with three kids who take over every space available leaves me with limited space for myself.  My office (actually only my work desk) has become one of the few places where it can be all me. This is where I work from when I’m at home, where I pay my bills, where I organize myself, etc., but this is also the place where all of “mommy’s things “ are and I have seen that the girls can easily grab my stapler, scissors, letter opener, sharpies etc. This will be my top priority to organize in a safer way so the girls won’t be able to get their little hands where they don’t belong!

My Car

I jumped on the minivan train a while ago and we love it so much we practically can live in it.  However, that means that you will find all sorts of things in there from shoes, super old food (yuck!), tiny toys stuck in between the seats, old crafts and more.  I’ve been thinking of making a permanent space for a mini hand-held vacuum and a portable trashcan inside the car. I also bought some back-seat organizers on our last trip and plan on installing them permanently so they can safely put their toys and crafts in there, that way they won’t leave everything on the floor and potentially end up on their mouth! (I’ve been doing my homework, guys!)

My Yard

When I first bought our home, I was super excited about just opening our front door and letting the kids run wild and free, but it turns out they still need a lot supervision because they will always find the one thing they are not supposed to touch, eat, or climb.  Things like the leaf blower, water hose, gardening tools or even some of the weeds that grow without us noticing might be dangerous for them.  This is going to probably be a weekend (maybe two) project because I’m sure they are going to also want to play while we clean up.  But I’ll figure out a way to make it work!

Holiday Decorations

Holiday season is just around the corner and I must confess that every year I end up over buying decorations: one, because I forget what I have, and two, because my husband is the one that stores it all and doesn’t always realize how delicate most of them are. They get damaged or even worse, broken, which is a big No-No when you are opening boxes with over-excited little kiddos who stick their little hands in without hesitation. So this year I am planning to sort them out, separate them by holiday (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) and take pictures of the items with my mini polaroid so I can tape them outside the plastic containers. I have done that with my shoe boxes and it saves so much time!

—————

I am already super excited to complete this list! Every time I check one thing off, it gives me so much satisfaction that all things are finally falling into place within my home.  I know that not all of us get excited with organization, believe me, this is not my jam either, but what I have realized is that when we tackle small chunks at a time, it becomes easier and easier.  I’m excited to see what I can come up for the winter season once I’m done with this list!

If you want more information on what some risks around your home could be, check out what Safe Kids WorldWide and Tide put together and see if you can spot the risks!

Paulina's #TidySafeCasa: Home Safety with Tide

Zixta Tide.jpeg

It’s been a little over two years since we moved into our new home, and from day one I’ve had a list of small projects that for one reason or another I haven’t been able to accomplish, from our laundry space to the girls’ room (which two of my girls share), to even putting our family pictures up on the wall! I know, that mom life is a real struggle.

Now that baby Zixta is not a baby anymore but a full-blown toddler I realized that I need to put all my efforts into those small projects because they will make my house a lot safer for her.  There are things that I never considered a priority before and sometimes we don’t think of them as being unsafe, but after booboos and tears I updated my list and wanted to share it with you.

Drawers.JPG

Kid’s room

Over Packed Drawers and Closets: Sabina, my middle child, has a lot of hand-me-downs from Krista, the oldest, clothes that she is gifted and all the “cute” clothes I buy from time to time.  Before I knew it, the drawers were over packed and she was constantly pushing in the shirts and her little fingers got stuck a few times (ouch!).  I would say the best solution is to go through the clothes at least every 2 months and take out whatever doesn’t fit, are too old or she doesn’t use and, like in my case, store them in the attic for the next child or simply donate them! Sabina even had space left in her drawers and closet after I did this.

Legos: This one is more for my safety than the girls, I mean, have you ever stepped on a lego before? That pain is very similar to labor in my head so I have a special box with a lid for it, especially because of Zixta who is a toddler and can easily swallow some of those tiny pieces.

Teddy bears and toys: How many of your kids drag those poor plush toys through the floor and dirt and are full of yogurt and juice and I don’t know what else? Yuck! There are so many germs stuck in those toys that can cause our babies to get sick. I put them in the washing machine, throw in a Tide Pod, set it and voila! I also fill up the tub and put some sanitizer and dump the toys there for a while, then let them dry out and that does the trick.

washingmachine.jpeg

Laundry Space

Talking about the Tide Pods, I always make sure all laundry products, as well as cleaning products are safely closed and placed out of the reach of the girls. A lot of the packages look bright and fun and can catch the little ones’ attention.

Hangers: They seem innocent but my baby grabbed a few at once and scratched her face with them. I store or hang mine high up now when I’m not using them.

Bathroom / Vanity Area: Another thing we don’t really think about much is our beauty products, such as cleansers, lotions, and even make up. Yes, a lot of the products we use are organic and natural but we still wouldn’t eat or drink them, right? Babies and toddlers on the other hand will put everything in their mouth, so I decided to store all of those even higher than before.  Even our beloved essential oils, they might not be toxic but if you put a drop of oregano oil in your mouth it will burn!  I have a special bag where I keep mine so the baby doesn’t get to them.

Kitchen and Living Room: As the girls grow, they become more independent and this means that sometimes they are able to get snacks from the fridge on their own. I’m making sure to regularly check the expiration date on foods as well, kids don’t really read them and this can be a problem if the kids eat something that already went bad.

When having babies around, it’s also good to check on loose wires because if they are anything like mine they love to chew on them!

All these are small things that we rarely think about but super important, most of these ideas I got from the Tide “Bingo Board”, it’s a fun way to play along while making our home a #TidySafeCasa!!

When I had Krista almost 7 years ago, being a first-time mom, I remember being extremely overwhelmed by all the choices I had to make.  From the diapers, to the stroller, car seat, even the type of diaper rash cream, and let’s not even talk about baby bottles.  How do you know which to go with, there are just too many to choose from!

Honestly, I have tried a bunch of different ones with all my babies. People say you should go with the one that looks most like your breasts, I tried those. Other people told me I had to go with the ones that would give them less gas, I have tried lots of those! Some other ones just look cool and I must confess I have tried those too, but I always keep going back to the ones that have consistently work with all my three girls.

I first tried Dr. Browns Natural Flow bottles with my oldest daughter when she was just a week old. I had a difficult delivery and my milk supply had suffered from it and so I had to supplement very early on. I had to do it again with my second baby when, at two weeks old, they told me I had to supplement due to weight loss on her end.  I was concerned with colic and nipple confusion but fortunately the internal vent system took care of that.  I must say that that is my favorite feature from the bottles because it not only prevents colic but also burping and gas, which results in a happy baby and a happy mom! I know a few friends that have suffered from bad colic with their babies and I have always recommended they tried these bottles to help cope with this problem.  I know that thankfully none of my babies suffered from that and I give credit to the use of Dr. Brown’s bottles.

Now with my third baby I knew what bottle to use if I had any issues. Fortunately, this time around I was able to exclusively breastfeed for the first few months of her life, but I eventually had to go back to work and I had to start using baby bottles again.  At first I was just using the bottles that came with my breast pump but I started noticing lots of burping and lots of gas coming from my baby, so I knew exactly what I had to do.  I once again picked up my Dr. Brown bottles. This time around I went with the wide neck bottles  because the bottle is shaped in a way that is easier for baby Zixta to hold, now that she is a little older she can hold her own bottle while laying down or even sitting up which is a huge help for me as I have other two kids to look after.

Having multiple kids always has me always looking for products that can make my life easier and my time most effective and I must say that Dr. Brown is one of those.  But most importantly it keeps my baby happy.  And we all know that a happy baby results in a happy mommy and a happy life!

A few months back I received an email from my three-year-old’s school telling us that the kids were going to do street trash clean-up to start teaching environment awareness.  In my mind, I thought “how cute” but in all honesty I didn’t think Sabina would get it, little did I know that after that day she would made it her mission to pick up all the trash she sees in the street because as she says, “we have to love our planet.” Yes, she is so right!

Ever since, I have been finding ways to get both her and Krista more involved and educated on the subject, so I was super happy when I was invited to join Scooby-Doo and generationOn, on the #DooGood Campaign where they make it their mission to get kids, parents and fans involved into taking action to create meaningful change in the community.

Scooby Group.jpg

A few Sundays ago, Krista and I got to participate in a full day Mystery Mission. That morning we got together with other kids and parents and we were picked up by the Mystery Machine. We then were taken to a secret location where we were received by Scooby-Doo himself!   We figured out we were at a local Middle School and our mission was to help a group of Farm Rangers build an edible garden for the students of Mid-City Prescott School.  Krista was super excited and jumped right into it.  I was super surprised of how much she can do now, she wasn’t afraid of picking up a shovel to fill out a wheelbarrow with horse fertilizer, then she jumped to pulling out weeds from the dirt, she learned how to plant different seeds and she even got to practice some team work skills while planting a whole tree in the ground with other kids and Scooby-Doo!

The best thing about the whole experience was knowing that the next day the students would walk in to a whole new edible garden! They would now have the opportunity not only to learn about sustainability but they would eventually also enjoy the veggies the kids planted.  I also realized that change starts with a small action, the fact that we were lending a hand (and a paw) by doing something fun on a Sunday morning will have such a great impact on the environment and in our community. It is so great to know that Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. Gang are leading the charge in taking the “mystery” out of helping the environment, there are many ways we can help solve the world’s environmental challenges with local action and you can too!

If you are wondering how you can help visit HEREto join the gang and take action! From recycling to, creating your own garden, to even grabbing a few friends and organizing a local beach clean-up. We are super inspired by this campaign and we have already signed up for more activities like these in school. If we all do our part together there is no issue we can’t solve.

A few days ago, i was looking through some pictures of me and the girls and it hit me, I am now the mother of THREE KIDS!! I know, what a breakthrough, right? But seriously, I think that everything has been so crazy after baby Zixta was born that I really haven’t stopped and take it all in.

The first few months are such a fog in my brain, i was so lost and broken that I just couldn’t or just didn’t even want to think about it.  i completely lost myself in the process of trying to hold on to my life before the baby. I wanted to be and feel “normal” again, I wanted control of my life. Get up and get going as it nothing had happened, after all I had been able to do it through my pregnancy. I had it all planned in my head, and nothing went according to plan. That drove me constantly crazy, I put so much stress on my body that I drove myself sick I retrieved from the world and increased my depression.

Those days are fading away slowly and each day things get better, I think I was too afraid of not being able to handle everything at the same time, work, home, my social life, friends etc.  And you know what, the truth is that I can’t.  At least not yet, and I’m learning to be ok with it. I have a new baby that needs me (or maybe I need her more), I have had to slow down and let go of trying to achieve perfection.  Every day is very different, some days go by easy, everyone cooperates and we make it on time to school, work, church or whatever commitment we have without any tears or fights. I find time to pick everyone’s clothes and do everyone’s hair (including mine) make color pancakes and even leave the house behind looking decent.  I might even squeeze in doing our grocery shopping with all three, or a quick trip to whatever fun event is happening around town (like really quick trips).  Wow I am a Super Mama!

But for real, most days are NOT like that, they are actually super crazy, there are fights and tears happening as early as 7 am.  I’m scrambling to get everyone ready and out the door with at least shoes on and a clean face, we have to take whatever I manage to throw on a paper plate to eat on the way while I barely brushed my teeth and put up my hair up on a pony tail.  If we have a commitment there is a 99% chance that I’m going to be late or even have to cancel.  When I do show I’m probably going to show up looking like someone is chasing me down the street.  I usually have milk stains on my clothes and realize that I don’t remember when was the last time I washed my hair or find myself asking, have I eaten today? When I’m running late, Zixta most likely will have a diaper explosion (no joke) or Sabina will spill food on her clothes, Krista will decide she must take that one toy we haven’t seen in days or she can’t remember where she put her homework 5 minutes ago.  Those days are hard, at the end of the day I am so spent that I put my head down and I’m gone in less than 3 seconds, with a dirty face, clothes and glasses on.

And this is my new normal, this is what my life looks like right now, it’s not super glamorous, but it is beautiful, its messy its crazy and I’m in love with it.  I realized that while I might not be accomplishing as much on my “professional side” I am accomplishing beyond what I would imagine at home.  We are making it work, creating a life that is worth everything.   My kids only see the good side, they have often told me that they have had the “best days ever” lately (even in the middle of a chaos.  And that is what I want my new normal life to be all about.

Paulina's Must-Have Pregnancy Products

By: Paulina Lopez-Velazquez

Pregnancy comes with many wonderful things, but let’s face it, not everything is great, we all go through different weird changes in our body, for me it has been the same in all three pregnancies:  Skin issues, swollenness, and breathing problems.  By now I have a pretty set routine down to tackle each issue and a few products that are my Must Haves that I wanted to share with you if you are having the same issues! Hopefully you find something useful for you. Ok here we go!

Skin Issues:

Itching much?  This has been a constant issue with every pregnancy, and it kills me! Towards the end of the day I just simply cannot stand my breasts, this is the area it hits the most as well as my thighs.   I try to avoid scratching as much as I can but I have woken up with marks all over my breasts because I do it over night without noticing.  The only thing that has worked for me is the Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Soothing Oil, I have used it since the first pregnancy and it’s a life saver for me! as soon as I found out I was pregnant I ordered it right away, I apply it through the day on my breast and my belly or as soon as I feel the itch start, it’s very soothing and it helps me with the scratching, plus it also helps avoiding major stretch marks. Whenever I run out I have also used some natural coconut oil, soothes me but the soothing oil works better for my skin.

Let’s talk Stretchmarks! Ever since I was young I had lots of weight issues (that’s a whole other blog post I should write about later) so my weight was up and down a lot from a very young age which caused some stretchmarks on my butt (can I say butt? Haha) So, since my first pregnancy I have been very mindful of taking care of my skin, I tried different things but my favorite so far is the Bio-Oil.  I am very happy to report that I have almost no additional stretchmarks from pregnancy, plus applying it on my skin gives me such a relief and It feels good! My only advise would be to put it at night right before going to bed because it might rub off on your clothes depending on the fabric.

My skin is cracking! And not in a good way, mainly my feet due to the swelling and since I have been pregnant over the summer I tend to use lots of sandals.  This has been the biggest struggle, I mean who wants to see some cracked up dry feet? Not cute, right? Well, this time around I found the perfect solution! I have tried over 8 different types of foot creams (seriously!) and none have worked better than the O’Keeffes Healthy Feet, I apply this cream daily in the morning and at night and my feet are looking and feeling great (ok, except for the swelling) I will definitely continue to use this cream beyond my pregnancy to keep my feet smooth.  They also have a Working Hands cream that my husband has been using for his psoriasis and that one is just as great!

Swelling and Sleeping

Let’s move on to swelling, which has been the biggest struggle for me, I mean I am now only wearing size 11 man sandals! I mean I’m only 5’4 so that’s a bit huge for me.  My feet start kind of normal (haha) but as the day progresses my feet just keep getting bigger and bigger, my biggest tips are taking lots of water, putting your feet up as much as you can (but when you have multiple children, a job, a home and a husband, how much can you do this, really?) And what has worked wonders for me is the Epson Salt, if I don’t have a whole lot of time to sit on the tub, I simply put ½ cup in a container with warm water and I put my feet there for 20 minutes, maybe while checking my phone, or catching up on some reading (multitasking at its finest) at the end of the day, I found some that have lavender added to them, so that also helps me relax and have a good night sleep.  You can find different ones on your favorite stores!

And talking about sleeping, I am now in the third trimester and sleeping is starting to be a challenge, I bought a nursing pillow recently which has made my nights SO much more comfortable but it does take a big chunk of space and my husband refers to it as “the barrier between us” so, sometimes I opt for using the regular pillows which still make me feel very comfortable.  However, my main problem is that when I lay down my nose gets really congested and it gets hard to breath. This causes me to breathe through my mouth overnight which at the same time causes mouth dryness, thirstiness and makes me wake up constantly and not get enough sleep, a never-ending circle that I had to end! Luckily I found the life changing essential oils, they have made a HUGE difference for me, I use the Doterra brand and add a few drops of lavender, peppermint and the Breath blend to my diffuser every night.  What a difference! I have been able to sleep with no problems ever since, I am able to breath and relax and just get a much better night sleep waking up in a much better mood! I carry the breath blend with me and I breath it through the day which has helped me with the daily congestion as well.  I have personally found so many benefits to using oils during pregnancy I would totally recommend for you to do some research and see if you can apply it to any particular problems you might be experiencing .

I know a lot of us experience a lot of different crazy side effects during pregnancy and I can only speak from my personal experience but I hope that if you are going through a similar experience as me you can find this products to helpful!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments, and share with me some of your own favorite products! I always like to hear and try new things.  Hang in there Mama! This is only temporary and by the time your baby arrives this will all be nothing but a blur.

Love, Paulina

CARS 3: If you want to Dream, DO IT! I will be there for you

By: Paulina Lopez @iampaulinalopez

Today was the official release of Cars 3, the latest addition to the Cars Franchise. I have enjoyed and loved all the Cars movies, but this one is by far my favorite!  It may be the fact that this time around there is such a strong female presence in the film. As a #Super Mama of two girls and a third one on the way, I was so happy to see a character that doesn’t have to be a princess, and that proves that with hard work and dedication you can accomplish anything you desire even in an environment that is considered “only for boys”, just as Cristela Alonzo has done.

The movie is still based on our beloved Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), and we see all the familiar characters from the previous films, but it’s amazing to see how they came out with a whole new story, a new perspective according to the “stage of life” he is going through.  That means that if your kids still haven’t seen the previous movies, they will understand and love the story just the same.  This time around we see McQueen struggling with the fact that he might no longer be the king of the race tracks, as a new generation of “younger” more advanced and modern race cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) are ready to take his place. After a devastating accident, he is faced with the tough decision of giving up or proving himself once again to his fans.

The movie takes us along on his journey as he decides to get his throne back, but we learn many lessons along the way, like the fact that a relationship between a boy and a girl doesn’t necessarily have to become romantic.  Cruz meets McQueen’s at the super modern and technologically advanced Rust-eze Racing Center, where she is assigned as his trainer. At the beginning he resists her,  but they eventually become friends and each other’s support and inspiration on the tracks.  While trying to find his way back, Mcqueen reflects on the ones that have come behind him, his teachers and mentors, and he knows that without their knowledge and advice he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did

In the movie, we also see a hard reality that we confront every day, where women must work extra hard to prove themselves in a male dominant environment and though at times she doubts herself, Cruz finds out who she is meant to be and becomes an inspiration for McQueen himself.

Cruz Ramirez ends up showcasing her skills leaving everyone around astonished, including those of us watching the movie, I know I was surprised because I was not expecting this ending at all! It’s a huge deal for girls all over and for the Latino community that Pixar made Cruz Ramirez such an important part of this story. She's had a life long dream, and we learn that Dreaming might be uncomfortable to outsiders, but its something that we should all do! As parents it is important to know that we HAVE to support our children's dreams even if at times they sound crazy, because being there for them is the one thing they should alway count on.

This is a movie you don’t want to miss, look for the nearest theater and check it out!

If you want to read a more about the people behind the movie, read the Movie Junket piece I wrote and check out this super cool trailer featuring Cruz and McQueen!

Cristela Alonzo: Racing through boundaries

By: Paulina Lopez-Velazquez @iampaulinalopez

This past weekend I was lucky enough to meet and hear directly from the talent behind the new Cars 3 Movie hitting theaters this weekend.  It was my first time attending a press junket and I really didn’t know what to expect, but I must say that I left feeling more connected and in love with the story.   Plus, I’m not going to lie, I was totally fanning over Owen Wilson, the super-hot Armie Hammer, Kerry Washington (eeek!) and of course, our girl Cristela Alonzo!

I have been a fan of both the Cars franchise and Cristela Alonzo for a long time now, so when I found out she would be involved in Cars 3 I was beyond excited.  Excited to see the movie, excited for her, excited for the Latino community and now I can say that I am excited for the generation of girls (including my girls) that will be watching and getting inspired by her character “Cruz Ramirez”.

If you know a little bit about Cristela you know she is not shy talking about her background, her humble upbringing and the fact that she grew up as she says, “poor without knowing it.” In fact, she is very outspoken about it in all her mediums. She has always been a face and a voice for the Latino community and we are all very proud of her accomplishments because she is an example of perseverance, hard work, of breaking barriers and fighting against stereotypes.  And Cruz Ramirez is just that, the perfect reflection of Cristela.  A female succeeding in an environment where all odds are against her, even her own doubts and insecurities.

The director, Brian Fee, told us that he wanted to deliver this message to his daughters through the story, “Never be afraid to try something.” He explained that there are a lot of things that are treated as “only for boys or only for girls” and he wanted to be very intentional about breaking that stereotype. There are quite a few female characters within the movie that manage to accomplish this.  Watch for Miss Fritter, voice by Lea DeLaria, you will love her!

I do have to say that this movie is not gender targeted, and this is what I find most fascinating.  Kerry Washington another female powerhouse (voice of Natalie Certain) pointed out that the movie manages to empower you beyond gender and beyond color. I agree with her, Cars 3 does not refer to gender but skill, it’s about the best person for the job doing the best they can. It’s about inclusivity, perseverance, learning from the ones that came before us, the ones that inspire us, honoring them and passing on that knowledge. We see that in the relationship that blooms between Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez

When Cristela was asked, who inspires her, she immediately said “My mom. She managed to give us a good life regardless of the circumstances around us…” She also mentioned her teachers, who pushed her out of her comfort zone and who told her, “If you want to dream, do it!”  I believe that a lot of our kids, particularly our girls, will identify with Cruz Ramirez, I know my girls already do and that makes me very excited. It is not every day that we see a Latina playing a big role on the big screen. It is not very often they see themselves in a movie character. I applaud Pixar for the great job they are doing including minorities into more main characters within their projects, and most importantly for not falling into stereotypes.

Change is happening and as parents we must teach our children that they should trust their instincts, believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Cristela said something very important, “Tell kids that they matter, that it is possible to have a dream.”

Make sure you watch Cars 3 when it hits theaters June 16th, I know you will love the movie just as much as I did!
